Point transfers
While not all, some points are able to be transferred to other programs. The two most common are Starwood points (SPG) and American Express Membership Rewards (MR). Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) also transfer.

Transfer times: As a general rule, MR transfers are instant with a few exceptions. Exceptions: SQ:(please complete) NH: Usually the morning of 2nd business day after transfer
SPG transfers can take anywhere from a single night to a month, depending on the airline.

Transfer rates and fees: All points transferred transfer at a 1:1 ratio unless otherwise noted.
One major exception, is that for every 20K transferred into an airline from SPG, there is a 20% bonus. For example, if you transfer 20K SPG into AA, you will get 25K AA, and if you transfer 21K, you will get 26K.

There is no fee for SPG transfers.
There is a fee for MR transfers made to CO and DL, along with any other U.S. based carrier, like Frontier. The fee is $6 for every 10K transferred, and is prorated. The maximum fee is $99. There is no fee for UR transfers.
Transferring to different people: MR are able to be transferred to anyone. SPG transfers to airline accounts with different names than the SPG account span the spectrum and differ by airline. (When editing, please bear in mind that your one experience does not define the rule, and include how many times it worked the way that you did it.)
